When the art remains ageless.

When I go to the museum I notice the dates of the artwork. For pieces that have outlived their creator I don’t think much about the date but for those pieces done in the last 20 or 30 years I wonder about the artist. If a painting I did today was acquired by a museum 20 years from now would I think much about it? If I am a well established and well known artist the museum may feel getting one of my artworks added to their collection is a success and would be excited to add it to their collection. But I’m not sure I would have much thought about a piece of artwork I did 20 years ago.

I was truly inspired by a piece of art I saw at the High Museum done by Ann Wolff. The piece is called Double Face Goddess and it was done in 1986. And I was thinking does Ann think about a piece of artwork she did 22 years ago? People love to ask artists about their work. They want to know what inspired the artist and any feelings they have on the work. If an artist has 22 years worth of other artwork since a piece was completed how do you reach back to that day in time to remember your deepest connection with that art?

I can’t remember much about 1986 even though I was 17 years old. And I would be hard pressed to remember my inspiration for any art piece I did back then. Truly the art outlives the artist.

See enough horror and experience enough pain and you become separated from your self.

An artist must create as often as possible. To cease this task is, to the soul of an artist, as ceasing to breathe.
